Two men were arrested after the murder of a British couple honeymooning on the tourist island of Antigua in the Caribbean.
The honeymooning couple were almost at the end of their two-week stay at this quiet, peaceful tropical island in the Caribbean when they were attacked in their bed by two robbers who broke into their room.
Catherine Mulany, 31, was killed instantly by a single gunshot to her head. Ben Mullany, also 31, succumbed to his injuries one week later at a hospital in Wales where he was airlifted for treatment.
Two men, aged 22 and 32, both from Antigua, were arrested last week and charged with receiving stolen goods belonging to the victims.
Now, two men have been charged with the murder of the British couple. The two men, aged 17 and 20, both from Antigua, are due to appear before a magistrate next week.
As AFP reports:
In a statement released through South Wales Police, the Mullanys' families said they "are pleased at how the investigation is progressing."
Scotland Yard detectives, including three forensic experts, and an officer from South Wales police have been assisting local authorities in investigating the homicides on this Caribbean island of 70,000 people.
Residents of this tiny island are showing their outrage over this and other crimes that have plagued their country in recent days.
As AFP reports:
Hundreds of Antiguans took part in a march last week to denounce the murders and other unresolved crimes that have taken place here.
I have had the pleasure of seeing this beautiful island in transit years ago. The people of this island are very friendly and hospitable. It is sad that this type of thing is taking place there now.
I hope the government does something to end this crime wave so that Antigua will be safe for visitors once again. These small tourist islands depend on the tourist dollars for their economies so it is important for them to deal with the problem of crime they find themselves faced with now.
