It is under 10 days to the Democratic National Convention and already protesters are out and about to make it known that the Denver City Police have constructed cages for unruly protesters.
Recreate 68 is a group of protesters hoping to "recreate" the "time of freedom" before the Democratic Convention of 1968. Unfortunately that convention also had one of the largest riots next to the Kent State Massacre. Although the group insists that its name is not in reference to the havoc, it seems that history is following them with that title all the same. Recreate 68 has threatened trouble at the DNC national convention over losing a protest permit in a lottery to the Democrats.
It is no surprise that the group is now vigilant in watching the moves of the local Denver law enforcement. They are in Denver now protesting the cages built in a downtown warehouse to "house" unruly protest. The construction of the makeshift jail was not announced by the city.
The cages are made of metal fences connected on top with razor wire. They are located in a warehouse that is said not to have a properly working fire safety system. The area is now being called "Gitmo on the Platt," and has been hailed as unfit for human detainees. The City of Denver insists that the cages are just as much for the safety of the protesters as it is for the police.
Recreate 68 protesters showed up clad in trench coats, sunglasses, and bandannas. The costumes were an attempt to hide their faces from police to discourage police from "profiling." They do not want their faces on record for the police to watch for at the DNC. Recreate 68 is calling on the mayors office to shut down the facility. The mayors office has announced a public tour of the facility will be available in a few days.
