Google Inc's India subsidiary is being sued for alleged defamation in the Bombay High Court by an Indian construction equipment company.
A blogger using the name "Toxic Writer" criticized a Mumbai-based company, Gremach Infrastructure Equipments & Projects Ltd on blogger.com, a subsidiary of Google Inc. The website allows individuals to create blogs without publicly revealing their identities.
The company sued Google India, whom the Bombay High Court ordered for the blog to be taken down on Feb 26 and also to reveal the true identity of the blogger in a four week notice.
"At the present stage, there is merit in the contention ... that the article put up by the defendant on the blog site is defamatory," the Wall Street Journal quoted the court as saying.
If Google loses the case it may have to disclose the blogger's identity, a move that could lead to the loss of anonymity of its users.
This is probably the first time Google has been slapped with a defamatory suit, a state the Google crew might not be taking to, with much pleasure at all.
