The United Nations mission in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI)
launched the “1,000 micro-projects” initiative which is a $5 million project to speed the reintegration of ex-combatants from the country’s civil war, as well as young people at risk.
The projects seek to support ex-combatants, ex-militias, young people at risk, and children and women associated with the Ivorian conflict.
There is a variety of of activities covered such as, technical training, agriculture, market-gardening, cattle rearing, fishing, forestry, construction, transportation, motor mechanics, public works and catering.
The micro-projects are designed to reduce poverty and youth unemployment. In addition, it is hoped that they will help provide a secure and stable environment for free and fair elections while reintegrating ex-combatants into their former communities.
In July, the Security Council extended UNOCI’s mandate by six months, stressing the importance that much-delayed presidential elections, now slated for November, are conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner.
