Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced Thursday August 7 to jail for a violation of his bond order.
He will be spending at least one night in a jail cell.
Thursday night is being spent by Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick in the Wayne County Jail. As a high-profile inmate he will have a private jail cell.
He was brought to the jail after District Court Judge Ronald Giles said Kilpatric had violated terms of his bond in a criminal case by going to Windsor, Ontario without notifying prosecutors or 36th District Court.
When Kilpatrick was taken to jail he was treated the same as other inmates. He was photographed and had a green jumpsuit given to him to wear.
Even though Sheriff Warren Evans said Kilpatrick will be treated the same as other inmates "
no better,no worse," there will be some differences. Being the Mayor of Detroit he is classified as high-profile.
According to MLive a spokesman for the sheriff, John Roach said,
"He will not be in the general population. He'll have his own cell (and) no direct contact with other inmates."
The mayor's private cell is approximately 13 feet by 10 feet. He does not have a television but does have a toilet, shower and a phone so he can make collect calls.
Roach said that Kilpatrick will dine on the same meals as his fellow inmates. Even though Roach couldn't confirm the menu WDIV-TV Detroit reported the evening meal consisted of a chicken casserole, vegetables and milk.
