In a sense of sheer irony, as Iraq has one of the largest oil reserves in the world, many Iraqi drivers deal with stress of having to fill up their gas tanks.
In a video blog on TIME Video, a sheer irony is revealed in Iraq. While Iraq does have the third largest oil reserve in the world, Iraqis have just as much a difficult time filling up their gas tanks. The irony is in play is that Iraq has very few gas stations across the country.
Many Iraqis have to turn to illegal means of buying gas due to the gas stations running out of gas by the middle of the day. In short, they must buy gas off the black market. The video shows that there are people off the side of the street selling gasoline. That gasoline is often either mixed with water or cooking oil. The gas off the black market is sold at a much higher price.
So far, the Iraqis have blamed both the United States Government and its own Iraqi Government. There has been much criticism of the Iraqi Government.
Back in March, a study released by the Pentagon said that Iraq’s reconstruction is taking much time is because of the security situation. It added that government corruption was to blame for the security situation.
While the whole world is hurting from gas prices, the people of Iraq suffer from both gas prices and the shortage of gas.
It’s a very ironic situation where Iraq is the third largest producer of oil, yet, many Iraqis are too feeling the pain at the gas pumps.
