Iran claims to have tested a new weapon that has never been seen by the world before and will give it the appropriate amount of technology to easily close the Straights of Hormuz.
Iran's deadline for response to the European Union has come and gone without a word from Iran as to whether or not it will accept the incentive package put together by the U.N. Security Council. Iran is now claiming that it has a new weapon that will allow it to close the Straight of Hormuz with ease. Some speculate the claims are in response to the country's refusal to curb nuclear enrichment.
U.S.A. Today Reports:
Fars, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, said that Iran was capable of imposing “unlimited controls” at the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, an important international oil route.
“Closing the Strait of Hormuz for an unlimited period of time would be very easy,” he was quoted as saying."
Those unlimited controls stem from the alleged procurement of a "new weapon" that can be utilized at sea and is claimed to travel up to 189 miles or 300 kilometers. The Revolutionary Guard has claimed it has tested the new weapon, but no further intelligence is said to be available onto the nature of the weapon.
Tehran has claimed the weapon is unique, Iranian-built, and has not yet been seen in the world. It is also claimed that the weapons range could easily send enemy naval units to the bottom of the sea, the claim seemed to be aimed at United States vessels currently in the Persian Gulf.
The U.N. Security council is looking to expand sanctions for Iran's refusal to comply with a freeze for freeze initiative that stated no more sanctions would be sought if Iran stopped Nuclear enrichment. The 6 week freeze compromised was supposed to lead to more talks.
