An online study of 49.3 million people (mostly in the U.S.) revealled women outnumber men on many social networks such as Facebook and MySpace.
Online reputation company
Rapleaf did this study last month, gathering data from social networks where users provide age and gender. The company then analyzed nearly 49 million people's details (mostly in the U.S.).
The study
found women in the 18-24 age group outnumber men from the same age group on a number of social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Bebo and Hi5.
On Facebook, there is almost a 2-to-1 ratio (1.72 times) of women to men, with 1,685,029 women in the age group 18-24 compared to 977,753 men.
On MySpace, the numbers are higher; there are 7,091,214 women and 5,226,788 men in the same age group.
LinkedIn and Perfspot social networks are the only networks where the number of men is greater than the number of female members.
ReadWriteWeb has detailed tables about the various age groups, and most of them show there are more women than men on social networks.
The study proves social networks have to cater more to female users. In my opinion, having women on these networks' management teams will help them better cater to women.
