A World War I war memorial for Canadian combat veterans who died at the battle of Vimy Ridge has become a favored spot for exhibitionists in France.
More than 60,000 Canadian soldiers died in World War I some of which perished at the battle of Vimy Ridge. In honor of those men France in cooperation with Canada erected a gorgeous and powerful memorial near the city of Arras.
The memorial used to be targeted by the usual violations of vandalism and graffiti, but another trend has surfaced that is disturbing Canadians and French authorities. The memorial is now used as a venue for exhibitionism.
A French couple has been arrested for making a pornographic film at the Vimy Ridge memorial. The couple posted the film online where people were able to watch it providing they paid for it. They were given a 4 month suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay £400 each and 1 euro in damages to Canada.
The couple were not the first to be caught with their pants down; 6 months earlier another French couple were fined for taking nude pictures at the memorial. Law enforcement officials have noted the new trend of exhibitionism not only at war memorials, but military graveyards.
According to the Telegraph:
The (Canadian) prosecutor, Elise Bozzolo, said: "The memorial has been known for a long time as a place where exhibitionism and voyeurism is common."
It is a problem which appears to be getting worse - people appear to get a perverse pleasure out of this behaviour," said a police spokesman in Arras.
