China, along with many other rapid developments in both infrastructure and economy, has witnessed yet another breakthrough, in the sheer number of users who browse the web everyday, surpassing even the US.
China's web-user population has more than quadrupled since the introduction of the Internet in the country a few years ago. The number of Internet users at 253 million marked a 56.2 per cent rise from 162 million reported in 2007, surpassing even the US which has reached an estimated 230 million users by the end of June this year.
Also, the numbers estimated constitute 206 million users who browsed through news online, 63.9 shopped online while 23.79 million paid money through online means.
Although the numbers seem quite promising for the developing country, it must be noted that only 19 of every 100 Chinese citizens have access to the Internet which implies that although the growth of Internet users is at an all time high, penetration through the country still needs more improvement. The ratio of users in the US is 72 per cent.
The country at the moment seems to be propelling with a rapid growth rate in a bid to strengthen its economy and book a place among the well developed nations across the world. It has been rumoured that China spends more than 50 per cent of its national income on military expenditure and developing its defence. This however, has been denied by the Chinese government.
Beijing is ready to host the 2008 Olympics and China views this opportunity as important to establish a healthy reputation globally.
