Earlier this week Mexican troops seized a small submarine smuggling drugs in the Pacific Ocean. And we thought Pancho Villa was dead! Read on for an interesting tale of right over wet.
According to Reuters News Service, a Mexican navy plane spotted the 32-foot green (not yellow as might be hoped) submarine carrying what appeared to be cocaine about 140 miles south of the tourist resort of Huatullco. A three-hour chase ensued. According to Captain Benjamin Mar, a Navy spokesman:

The submarine traveled almost at the surface of the sea and when it came up we took advantage. Special forces troops swooped on the submarine from a helicopter and subdued the crew of four.

This encounter exemplifies the growing trend on the part of the Mexican government employing the military to fight drug smugglers who heretofore have been very successful in moving South American cocaine through Mexico and into the United States. Since Mexico’s new President, Felipe Calderon, took office in December of 2006, thousands of troops have been deployed to drug-trafficking hot spots.

Smugglers are a resilient lot, and authorities have seen drugs moved in Mexico though tunnels under the U.S. border and hidden in canned food and dolls. This is the first time a submarine has been used, but then, there’s a first time for everything, isn’t there!

Smugglers beware unless you can find The Beatles and hide out in their yellow submarine. The change in color is sure to fool the authorities!

They are finding novel ways to get drugs in. But there is a huge market inside, unless they refuse to buy, the sellers will find various means to ship it here. If we hear stories about murders, robberies etc, all points to this drug mess.

Yep---when there's a market, the dealers will find a way to get the drugs to buyers.

It's really such a sad commentary on today's world.

You are welcome, MDee. Drugs are part of today's world whether we like it or not, and I honestly don't think we'll ever win that war.

Hi MDee, I agree with you and Debra about and endless war, just by accident I'm hearing right now Riders in the Storm, and think that Jim died on drugs, so it's and old problem, now it's growing because there's more people.

I'm not sure about your thought related to "the first time a submarine is used", I'd rather say it's the first time one is detected, like it happen with the tunnels across the border.

    Hi Jorge,
You may be right about that. I was quoting the news source i got my information from, but perhaps subs have been used and gone undetected before.
    Thanks for your comment.
    I appreciate it.

Hi MDee, actually it was not exactly a submarine, it is just an immersible, the hull is made on carbon fibre and most of the structure is wood, so a depth of more than 3 feet would squeeze the vessel.

I'm gonna check because something like 2 years the secrets services found a place in Peru where a real submarine was under construction according to the note it was with Russian technology because they got the blue prints on the table.

That kind of equipment is able to travel deeper and avoid more sonar devices.

Also the main destination was USA, so they don't need to pay to others for the movement, if I well remember California coast has many good places to dock without notice.or maybe they transfer the cargo to different small ships that seems to be fishing.

Anyway at the same time that many people around the world use technology for good, many others use it for their black purposes.

    Regards.
