article imageCalifornia single-handedly uses as much gasoline as China

While some critics blame China for the rise in gasoline prices, a California Energy Commission report shows that California consumes as much gasoline as the entire country of China. The report also found California uses more than Russia, India or Germany.
The report was issued by California Energy Commission's State Alternative Fuels Plan last year during the Christmas season, but seems to have been missed by media and others. The report showed California alone uses more gasoline than any country in the world (except U.S. of course).

California uses 20 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel every year, which is greater than China for now (China is expected to exceed the State later this year).

China has a population of 1.3 billion, while California has 37 million in total.

California has seen a 50 per cent increase in oil consumption in 2007 compared to consumption in 1988.

You can read the full report (a 107-page PDF document) at this link.

Instead of blaming one another, I think it's time countries find a way to use more green energy and rely less on fossil fuels.

I could not agree more. Let's start making the connections. Two blogs here, today, mention respectively Gm's Volt electric vehicle and an Al Gore statement re: what is possible in the pursuit of "clean" electricity.
These are the routes we have to take, in my opinion.

An irony occurs that where most known oil is located are areas very well suited to the production of solar energy. Great if we could extract that oil for the production of the numerous "benign" products instead of burning it.

I read in some place, even if they place solar panels at Sahara desert, it will generate enough electricity for the entire world. Initially Solar was expensive, now they have made it real cheaper and harnesses more energy than ever before. I think the reason they don't want to invest because they are comfortable with record profits from oil.

By my calculations, the Californians have 20 billions reasons a year to vote McCain... I think that he, in that one area (securing oil resources), would be more effective than the ethanol friendly Obama. However, I doubt that the citizens of California will be swayed by such an argument; which is a good thing considering who I want to win in November.

Don't forget that California distributes a whole lotta fruit. I haven't read the report yet, but does it take into account all the fruit shipped around the country by trucks and such? Plenty of beef to go around, too.
Not saying Cali could use a little less gas, but until we have solar-powered 18 wheelers to ship free range cranberries to every Whole Foods in the nation, it's gonna be a gassy state.

And the U.S. keeps demanding other countries, like China, get on the Green bandwagon and clean up their act, while IT is still denying global warming is contributed by humans...hmm...hypocrite nation! Go ahead and shoot me see if I care - somebody's gotta say it.

That's just political talk trying to score bonus points, the media should point this right away when somebody says like this, but they don't. A true journalism and the press would do it, it just shows they are not. They are too busy on other trivial issues and keep repeating it again and again.
