About three weeks ago, inmates at the Westchester jail started complaining about being bitten by insects in their cells, and not long after, various officers started complaining of being bitten while they were out on patrol in different patrol cars.
New Rochelle, NY - Bedbugs. We've all heard about them, but usually when it's involving hotels or motels that have been found to be infested with them. The Westchester jail has now seen its share of the nasty little bugs.
When inmates started complaining about being bit when they were in their cells, the bedbugs weren't found in or on the mattresses, but rather on the floor. Then, the block was quarantined for three days so that the bugs could be exterminated.
However, when that should of been the end of it, it wasn't. Three different police cars were found to have these nasty little buggers too. They put in their appearance at odd times, with different officers, no matter what the shift.
Capt. Kevin Kealy said that there wasn't a "massive infestation" and that there has been no infestation reported in the past. He went on to say that all it takes in one person with one bug on them to create a problem.
As a precaution, the men's locker room was fumigated and none of the prisoners were injured.
