A former follower of Charles Manson is dying in jail. Yet that wasn't a good enough reason for a parole board to release her.
Susan Atkins, a former follower of Charles Manson and confessed killer, has been denied compassionate release by the state of California. Atkins is suffering from brain cancer and is still serving a life sentence despite testimony from relatives of Atkins to include her husband, James Whitehouse.
Whitehouse claims that Atkins is only able to put together a few sentences a day and can barely snap her fingers. Whitehouse also says that doctors have given her three months to live and that she has had her left leg amputated and the right side of her body is paralyzed.
Atkins was among other Manson cult members who were convicted of killing eight people in 1969. During a confession, Atkins said that she stabbed actress Sharon Tate while on LSD and did not stop until Tate was no longer screaming. Tate, who was married to director Roman Polanski, was 8 1/2 months pregnant.
"She then tasted her blood and wrote the word 'pig' in Sharon Tate's blood at the residence, "said District Attorney Patrick Sequeira.
So far,$2 million has been spent by California taxpayers to take care of Atkins.

Hmm...I can see both sides of this...and let the chips fall where they may. I know I read somewhere that this woman was so hardened that when she went to chapel service after being invited numerous times and finally gave in, she stole a Bible cause she was afraid to ask for one. She'd hide and read the Bible (she'd get mad at the Israelites who always seemed to backslide) and later received Christ. So I'm sure she's content where ever she is - I don't think she cares whether she's released or not - but I can see her family wanting to spend her last moments with her - and can see why she's refused it by the parole board, the graphic description of her crime is brutal indeed.

She'll die as you sit on the fence, Sheba. Another case of a parole board playing to the vengeful mob, in my opinion.

i hope the scum festers in the pond where she belongs. she participated in a HORRIFIC crime, lest anyone forget. Compassion? her compassion was given when they treated her for illness!THATS COMPASSION.
I am surprised there is any discussion regarding this terrorists health. I feel sad for those she murdered, senselessly slaughtering. :o(

Oddly Skepti I agree, she has spent nearly forty years behind bars, and that is just about thirty eight to many, she should have taken the long walk down the Green Mile no more than two years after the trial when the appeals were done.

Why anyone thinks this woman deserves an ounce of comfort from her family in her dying days, should talk to Roman Polanski and ask him if he misses the comfort of his wife or the love he never got to feel as he comforted his dead, slaughtered baby.

"Behold the goodness and the severity of the Lord." She got saved when she accepted Christ (COMPASSION/goodness), but that does not mean that she no longer must live with the consequences of her past actions (JUSTICE/severity). She more than anyone else I'm sure understands this. It is her family, not her, who are seeking the release. Like I said, at this point I don't think she cares one way or the other.

She, Manson, and his other followers who participated in these murders were all initially sentenced to death, but the death penalty was ruled unconstitutional in California shortly thereafter, and all their sentences were then commuted to life in prison.

Sheba, you are a much better Christian than I.
The way I see it is, this woman originally got the death penalty and it got commuted to life. It did not get commuted to "life, until you get a brain tumor and then you get a 'Get Out Of Jail Free' card". No, she got life and life she should serve.
I mean really, what would anyone say if she miraculously recovered from the brain tumor (well, stranger things have happened) and she's out?

Completely agree with you.

With cop killer's getting out after serving 10 year's of a life sentence, and the stone cold fact that Polanski,is a convicted pedophile! I say let this poor soul OUT.let her die with some kind of compasion.because it is we here on earth, that will receive the dark karma.if you really want to do something constructive help get the two border agent's OUT of prison! they are the one's who need your HELP!
-
Quite frankly Sheba, I don't give a damn that "she accepted Christ". That's what almost all convicts facing life in jail or a death-sentence do.
She was judged and sentenced for her crimes on the mortal plane. Her (or your) god can have her when she's left this plane, from behind the bars where she belongs.
I'm getting very tired of consistently seeing you throw your personal interpretation of Christian beliefs in almost every thread you take part in.

For what Atkins did to Sharon Tate and her unborn child, she should rot in prison until death. Life should mean life in her case.
If this were Manson himself or Ted Bundy, how many of you would be pleading for clemency?
She deserves nothing but to die and be buried in Boot Hill, to be forgotten for all time.
-
To those of you who think this murderous bitch should be shown any mercy at all, and released based on her ill health, would you feel the same way if it was Manson himself who was about to die from a brain tumour? Would you even consider having this maniac released for any reason at all? She's part of his clan and deserves no mercy!

Hacked Sharon Tate to death until she stopped screaming while 81/2 mo pregnant, tasted her blood and then wrote in it on the wall.....mmmm, wonder how compassionate THAT was? I agree.
Brain cancer or not, her final 3 should be made comfy in her 3x3 or 6x6 or whatever stone cold barred room she is completing her sentence. Odd story to bring up = we made reference the other night and my daughter said, who is Manson. I told her to google it....
She read and was horrified at the senseless murders committed at the hands of these psychos. Release HER, you have to release psycho self-proclaimed jesus. No way.
-
I have to side with those that believe that she needs to stay right where she was sentenced too. Anyone else wouldn't get the luxury of being let go just because they might be in ill health. Life. Until the day you take your last breath. Period.
-
I've never heard of someone being let out of jail because they're dieing. I doubt if it happens all that often and especially not a stone cold killer.
