The Astronomical Observatory of Mallorca wants to name an asteroid after Rafael Nadal, the hometown hero. The naming proposal was approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
Rafael Nadal, 22, is a four-time French Open champion and the recent winner of the Wimbledon Open tennis tournament.

Now, his name will be added to an asteroid in our galaxy.

An asteroid was discovered five years ago by the Astronomical Observatory of Mallorca. The asteroid is four kilometers in diameter and hurls through space at a top speed of 20 kilometers per second (12.43 miles per second). Majorcan astronomers want to name this asteroid after Nadal, the hometown hero.

The observatory told Reuters it was a tribute to "one of the greatest tennis players of all time." The IAU has given approval to this proposal.

Rafael Nadal after his famous victory over Roger Federer will be aiming for gold at the Beijing Olympics next.

As long the Asteroid Nadal doesn’t hit the Earth and play tricks with us like his tennis shots, I don’t think the astronomers will protest it.
