Reportedly the deadliest attack in three years, nine US soldiers are killed and fifteen wounded in this latest attack in Afganistan.
The militants
fired rocket propelled grenades, machine guns, and mortars from homes and mosques in an attack that started in the wee hours of the morning and continued throughout the day. This took place in a village, Wanat, in the northeast province of Kunar.
U.S. officials say militant attacks in Afghanistan are becoming more complex, intense and better coordinated than a year ago. Monthly death tolls of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan surpassed U.S. military deaths in Iraq in May and June. And last Monday, a suicide bomber attacked the Indian Embassy in Kabul, killing 58 people in the deadliest attack in the Afghan capital since 2001.
The previous deadliest attack took place in June 2005, where 16 US soldiers were killed ironically in the same province.
Attacks are on the rise in Afganistan and there are casualties elsewhere in the country as well, while the violence in Iraq is at a lull - for the last four years - according to the report.
