The once popular yearbook at colleges is not so popular anymore. Several universities will cease to produce them starting next year.
The tradition of the yearbook is quickly disappearing. The yearbook has been an annual publication that recorded the people and the events that took place during the academic year.

Colleges across the country are cutting down on how many yearbooks they publish and others are dropping them entirely.

Part of the problem is the cost of the hard-bound books. With a typical cost that can be as high as $75.00 students are finding they can't afford them. The cost of tuition continues to rise as well as living costs keep climbing upward. The yearbook looks like a luxury that most cannot afford. Another problem for the yearbook is today's students have replaced the printed page with electronic media and have become the Facebook and MySpace generation. These social networks have linked hundreds of friends and also offer digital photographs and videos which make a traditional yearbook look a little old fashioned.

Purdue University, in Indiana has published a yearbook for over a hundred years but this will be their last year for one. Nearby DePauw University also will cease to publish yearbooks after this year.

Virginia Wesleyan and Mississippi State University also will join the other colleges that have decided to discontinue publishing yearbooks.

According to Kay Jones in thedmonline.com the yearbook advisor at MSU they will cease to publish yearbooks due to lack of interest and budget cuts. She said with the enrollment of approximately 17,000 students as of a few weeks ago there were only 300 orders for this year's yearbook.

Jones said,
"We have lowered the price of the yearbook and even tried different marketing techniques. The interest among students is just not there."

Even though some colleges have tried to modernize the yearbook by adapting the new media by including DVDs that sum up the year along with printed book there are still too few students, readers or editors that are interested in them anymore.

The students in McKendree University in Illinois use the latest technology but the the university still publishes a yearbook but only print 150 copies even though they have 1,500 students but only half of the books are bought by students. To be on the staff of the yearbook was at one time a prestigious position but now there are only eight students doing this job. Even the printed magazines for alumni have been affected and increasingly are being replaced by online editions.

According to Economist.com yearbooks are still hanging on in American high schools but even their future is unclear. The parents and students are complaining about the high prices for the yearbooks. This generation has always had the internet and they are losing interest in the printed book.

    What a cool find Mums.

*sigh* I only wish the same had happened when I graduated HS. I've made it a personal mission to have my pics forcibly removed from any copy that I can find. Being a geek and eternally looking like one are two completely different things ... lol

David's a god-send when it comes to great leads!!!

*blushing* Although I look good now, it took a few years of growing into my ears and getting comfy in my skin. When I graduated, I looked the same as I had in gr. 9. These days I'm glad as most folks underestimate my age by up to a decade =D.

We humans are strange when we are young we want to look older as we get older we want to look younger.

But its definitely better to look younger when one passes a certain age. :)

I'm not surprised that yearbooks are being phased out. I love mine, but over the years, they had begun to show signs of wear, so I donated them to the county historical society some years back so that they could be preserved.

Does this mean we are going to see a different photo? One where we can see you without the flash hindering our view? :)

I have been to a few county historical societies where there are yearbooks. That is really a good idea especially now if they will cease to be published.

I don't think it would work for preservation. They would just think you are a volunteer and put you to work.

*nodding*. When I had mine done I had to remove my glasses (musn't obscure the eyes), not smile, and sit through several attempts at a 'good' picture. The photog had to put black tape behind my wings ... errr .. ears because they were too transparent. She did say that they brought out the blue in my eyes though. In the end there wasn't a thing she could do to camouflage the neck that I inherited from the giraffe half of my family. =D

No, he didn't get one and I'm guessing he probably didn't know about them either. However, he DID just get his official diploma in the mail this past week!! It looks awesome, and of course I swelled up with pride for him all over again just looking at it. Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude. =D

I sure will!! He's got a DJ CJ account and I keep trying to get him to come back on here and write some more. But for some reason, he thinks he actually needs to "work" when he's at work. I tell him he can do both! Shoot, that's what I do!! haha =)

Sorry Sykos that I didn't put a warning on my comment that it was only intended for women to read.
I would never want men being upset because they are unable to multitask like women have to do. :)

Hmmf ... well Mums, I'll have you know that I'm currently clicking, typing, listening to the Matrix soundtrack, monitoring the activities of my feline daughter (poor dear is in heat for the umpteenth time this year) and mentally prioritizing the rest of my day.

    Can't multitask .... puhleeeeze, I learned that @ Marmaduke's knee ... when I wasn't biting her behind =D

OK sorry Son. I am impressed BTY. :)

I am sitting here in front of the computer not listening to anything but the rain and wondering if it will stop this afternoon so I can go to the grocery store.

Good Stuff! Textbooks are insanely expensive - there's no need for that. And think about the trees! Those glossy, 125.00 pages can't all be recycled, can they? And if it is all recycled, why the hell am I paying so much?!

Textbooks should be offered online for like 10 bucks a year on all the textbook websites. They'd have tonnes of clients; no costs (other than domain maintenance fee's, which surely is a lot less than the cost of producing and distributing texts), zero waste, and think about all the advertising money that could be made! Oh yeah, and students wouldn't lose months of precious grocery money at the start of each semester...

    Onward with Online Textbooks!

Thanks GRMM and welcome to DJ.

With the bad economy the books are just becoming to expensive to produce and certainly to be bought.

It is fun looking back at the old pictures and the events but times are much different now than when yearbooks were popular.
