The Barack Obama presidential campaign responded to Rev. Patrick Mahoney's charge that the Democratic nominee wants taxpayers to pay for abortions by saying that they want to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies.
According to Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, the best way to reduce abortions in the United States is to lower the number of unintended pregnancies. As a state senator from Illinois, Obama voted against a bill that would have prohibited the use of taxpayer money to pay for abortions.

Mahoney showed up at Obama's Capitol Hill office building on Tuesday with a sign depicting the Democratic presidential nominee dressed as Uncle Sam and declaring ''I WANT YOU TO PAY FOR ABORTIONS!'' The reason for the dramatic gesture is due to Obama trying to appeal to white Christian evangelicals. ''There is even a radio ad running on Christian stations highlighting Obama's religious rhetoric, including statements like ''I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth.''

Obama has stated that he supports the Freedom Of Choice Act which says that women in the United States have a right to choose whether or not to terminate a pregnancy. This right must be federally protected and granted.

On Friday, Karl Rove questioned how Obama can be the great unifier of Democrats and Republicans while at the same time, promoting taxpayer funding for abortions.

Senator Obama has caught himself in a verbal sort of spider's web regarding the late-term abortion exemption of a woman's mental health: He says that he is in agreement with states trying to restrict or even prohibit late-term abortions unless there is a physical risk to the life of the mother. Earlier, he said that he doesn't consider a woman's ''mental distress'' as a valid exemption to prohibiting the late-term abortion.

However, he began to take some heat from abortion rights groups over this position so his spokesman Shapiro issued this statement: ''Senator Obama believes that while 'mental distress' should not be covered by a health exception, there will be cases where carrying to term a pregnancy may seriously damage a woman's mental health and those cases should be covered.''

Sojourners founder Jim Wallis and others believe that Obama can capture some of the anti-abortion voters if he agrees to a commitment which would seriously reduce abortions. Obama has been reluctant to use this strategy because he fears that this would alienate Hillary Clinton supporters. He desperately needs their votes in large numbers and percentages to unite the Democratic Party in his battle against McCain.
