Talk about punishment fitting the crime. At least that is what Weatherford, Texas jurors believed when they handed out 40 consecutive life sentences to a man for repeatedly sexually assaulting three teenage girls.
Last week, James Kevin Pope, a 43-year-old Weatherford, Texas, man found himself "overwhelmed," according to a Fox news report. He was found guilty of sexually assaulting three girls for nearly two years.

The defense attorney in the case attempted to lessen the trauma sustained by the victims, calling their sexual assault "BS":
...Rick Alley, Pope's defense lawyer, told jurors in closing arguments that the victims were incapable of understanding what happened, the Weatherford Democrat reported in its Wednesday online edition.

"I respectfully submit to you that is BS. If it was as traumatic as they indicate, they would be able to give you (specific dates and times of the incidents). Simply because it's shocking doesn't make it true," Alley said.

A United States Secret Service Agent had uncovered over 200 images of child pornography from Popes home computer after Pope had made inappropriate comments to one of his friends, who in turn notified Child Protective Services and spearheaded the whole investigation.

Experts testified that Pope's computer activity focused on teen and pre-teen sexual activity, although the defense tried to say that anyone could have accessed the computer.

The defense attorney also asked jurors to return a "fair" verdict, claiming that there was "no serious bodily injury to the victims, no physical harm or permanent disfigurement was inflicted upon them and no death occurred".

After two hours, the jury returned with 40 life-term sentences for each count of sexual assault of a child and 20 years for each sexual performance with a child count. The grand total?

Over 4,000 years in prison. A fair verdict.

Pope will be eligible for parole in the year 3029.

He should be made to work and pay financial damages to the three victims. He will serve the remainder of the term in Hell :)

I agree...but you know what Chris, the defense that they victims did have PHYSICAL damage just enrages me to no end. So physical damage carries a perceived weight over emotional? I'm glad this jury saw differently.

The stacking of sentences was a ROFL thing, really.

As the guilty verdict was read, Pope’s mother sobbed heavily.

Good job you weren't there. Rolling on the floor would likely have gotten you thrown out.

That kind of statement always gets my blood pressure up.
Let the dumb, compassionless jerks that say that be locked up for a week or two and be constantly raped by inmates in a prison.

I think the jurors were a little too lenient with him.

Had I had any reason to be in that court room, skeptic, rolling on the floor laughing would have been the LAST thing I would have been thrown out for doing to such a disgusting perverted piece of smegma slime unfit to breathe the same oxygen that even the most horrific of creatures breathe.

So as I stand and observe from a near and laugh in his general direction ...bwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Because he deserveth much greater in my opinion but a 4,000 year sentence says oodles and the parole aspect?
Well, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT! Hope his health is fantastic so that he can see the light of day in the year 3000 plus - as his bones crumble. :o)
    Freakin perve.

I agree, Cyn. A baseball bat adorned with spikes from the old days handed to bubbah might prove fair.....sigh. I never understand WHY but what I fail to understand even more are the cretins who lurk in depths waiting to assist these pervs, attempting to minimize the victim's pain and suffering.

Like I said before, its as if the emotional mutilation that lasts forever isn't enough to add up to the child rape. When these creeps do this, it ruins young girls' relationships for a long time, many never able to form a "healthy" relationship ever.

Oh, but because there was external wounds, it was somehow LESS impactful. Defense of childmolesters and child rapists is necessary to uncover thos who are wrongly accused but damn, it gets my BP going as well because of those who minimize the victim's trauma.

This man should rot for what he's done and his sentence is more than fair because his victims will never have a "normal" life, thanks to him.

If that had been one of my sons I would have been sobbing so heavily that I would have had to have been carried out of the court room.

To think that a son would be capable of something so horrendous SHOULD tear up any mother.

Now, you can appreciate my feelings about my own son. It's hard on parents whether their son is guilty or not.

I know that you do, Cynthia...as do many others here at DJ. It is hard...but what this mother went through is far worse than my situation. I think knowing w/out a doubt that you child has commited some horrible act and the proof is there...that would be like having your heart cut out.
