A CNN poll asked the respondents how the founding fathers would feel about the way the country has turned out 232 years after declaring its independence from Great Britain. A majority say they will not be pleased with it.
The
CNN/Opinion Research Corp polled the public via telephone and asked them how the signers of the Declaration of Independence would feel about the current status of U.S. About 69 per cent of adult Americans said they will be “disappointed” by the way national has turned out overall.
Only twenty-nine percent said the
founding fathers will be “pleased”.
But that doesn’t mean the respondents didn’t like this country: 61 per cent said they are extremely proud to be Americans, and another 28 per cent said they are very proud. Seven per cent said they are “moderately” proud, and two percent said “only a little” and 1 percent answered “not at all”.
The percentage saying "extremely proud" has remained unchanged from 2005.
In a 2001 poll, however it was quite a contrast: about 54 per cent of the respondents believed the founding fathers would be pleased with the state of the country today, according to Keating Holland, CNN polling director.
What has caused to change this mood by 180 degrees? Is it because of George W. Bush? It will be interesting to hear what Bush and Cheney thinks about this poll. I can imagine Cheney’s response based on his previous replies. He will say “
So”?
