A unicorn deer was spotted in Italy, raising speculation amongst all about the nature of this unique single-horned phenomenon. Must we consider it the inspiration behind the fabled horse with healing powers, or a natural miracle...
According to the Center of Natural Sciences in Prato, Italy, a deer with a single horn was born in the research center's park. Much like the mythical unicorn. Gilberto Tozzi, director of the Center of Natural Sciences, said: "He is believed to have been born with a genetic flaw; his twin has two horns.

Being the first time he's seen such a case, Tozzi suggests that it is precisely these kind of cases that may have inspired the myth of the unicorn.

"This shows that even in past times, there could have been animals with this anomaly," Tozzi said, "It's not like they dreamed it up," he said.

Though single horned deers are not unheard of, this case is unique owing to the positioning of the horn in the centre. Fulvio Fraticelli, scientific director of Rome's zoo, suggests that the horn might be the result of trauma early in the animal's life.

However it is left to determine the exact reason for the phenomenon, genetic flaws or a reason to believe in magical realities.

It is more fun to believe in magical realities but there is probably another reason for it. :)

I like to go with something genetically happening, but its cool that that happened heh

This is how people think they saw werewolves and all that, I think...

According to me, that's largely because of hormonal imbalances, I must say.

now that's really something! Reminds me of all those fantasy fiction books on my shelves, unicorns, centaurs and a host of others. My passion being horses, the idea of unicorns roaming the world sounds really cool. This however, is a deer. Still something. ;-)

Nice. In India, it would have been considered a reincarnation perhaps!:) But such is nature's (read, genetics) mysteries.

Very interesting! I can see where the connection lays between real and fantasy!

I think it's a pretty cool look for a deer, that horn does look kind of sharp though.
