Thanks to a new tax break, Tesla, an electric car manufacturer, will continue to produce its environmentally friendly technology in California.
After learning that Tesla Motors Inc., currently based in the Silicon Valley, was giving serious consideration to building its second-generation vehicle in New Mexico, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and California State Treasurer Bill Lockyer worked out a deal to keep the all electric car company in California.
The tax break will allow Tesla to avoid paying state taxes on the equipment needed to build its new sedan. That adds up to a savings of seven to nine percent on each purchase. According to T.M.I, the next car off the assembly line will seat five passengers and will be able to travel 225 miles between charges to its electric engine. Its top speed is one hundred and twenty five miles per hour and goes from zero to six MPH in under four seconds. These features all come at a cost of approximately 60,000 dollars.
As stated in the Desert Dispatch (AP) July 1, 2008, Governor Schwarzenegger lined up with other celebrities to buy Tesla's first generation sports car, The Roadster, at a "bare-bones" cost of 109,000 dollars. He says it drove him "absolutely insane" to learn that the company planned to take its production line to another state. This is one sweet deal "Arnie" won't be saying "Hasta La Vista, Baby" to anytime soon.
