Rock Band's sequel will be available in September, according to publisher MTV Games and developer Hamonix. Available exclusively for the Xbox 360, Rock Band 2 will be compatible with its predecessor, allowing gamers to import previously bought tracks.

Digital Journal -- Rock Band soared to gaming fandom when it capitalized on the popularity of karaoke-style games such as Guitar Hero. Now publisher MTV Games announced it will make Rock Band 2 available in September for the Xbox 360. Versions for PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii will launch later in the year.

Rock Band 2
's full details haven't been leaked yet but DigitalJournal.com learned a few interesting features about the music game: the playlist of over 80 songs will include more female-fronted bands as well as some artists who have never graced the Rock Band setlist yet. And Harmonix will release a sturdier drum kit and a Fender Stratocaster guitar lined with faux wood-grain buttons.

Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos told Associated Press:
For fans interested in hardware, the second-generation peripherals are an amazing step forward from the first-generation guitar and drums. The instruments make huge strides in both fit and finish as well as features and functions

Rock Band 2 will be fully compatible with Rock Band's original instruments, as well as the more than 100 songs that were available to download for the first game.

The arrival of Rock Band 2 will mark the beginning of another battle in the music game wars. Guitar Hero is set to release another version of its series hit in the fall and Konami will launch Rock Revolution.

To date, Guitar Hero III has sold 2.5 million units while Rock Band has sold 1.3 million units.
