The Bhutan government has imposed a laptop ban for its national assembly. It says lawmakers are spending too much of their time playing computer games.
After decades of monarchy, only recently Bhutan installed a new democratic system. Democratic elections were held for the first time in March 2008. The government wants to move forward in a positive manner and has imposed this laptop ban for lawmakers.
Nima Tshering, the speaker of the Bhutan assembly told Reuters:
The members can be distracted playing games and viewing pictures.
Not all are happy with this decision; some lawmakers are complaining that laptops are more convenient than carrying around bundles of papers.
The Bhutan National Assembly also has imposed bans on electronic gadgets, eating and smoking.
In 2006, Bhutan was rated the happiest country in Asia and the eighth happiest country in the world, despite being the least developed nation according to Business Week.
