The Internet itself could be one factor that could possibly hurt the candidacy of presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona in the US Presidential race.
In this day and age, just about anybody can access the
Internet. There are users both young and old that can access the Internet. Unfortunately, for the younger users, it makes them vulnerable to all sorts of sexual predators that use the Internet for their own sick and fiendish purposes. However, this is not about sexual predators and the Internet.
This is about the power and the influence of the Internet. With access to the Internet, you can access and upload information much faster. We are still in the digital and electronic age. Still, there are times where you cannot replace good old fashioned physical face to face interaction. Presumed Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois has taken advantage of both conventional and unconventional means to get his name out. He is using both electronic and physical means to get his name out.
Ever since the start of the Democratic primary contest between Obama and the other Democratic hopefuls, results have remained consistent, he has obtained and maintained support with younger voters. When it was between Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton of New York, Obama maintained such support. At the same time, younger voters are more likely to use the Internet.
Online, there is the indication that there is far more that support Obama than those that support presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona. In a nutshell, it seems that McCain supporters are severely outnumbered by Obama supporters when it comes to the Internet.
According to 19 year old, New York University student and McCain supporter, Ryan Mitsotakis, the feeling is like that of loneliness.
Today, we have such online sites like YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Xanga, and so forth. Neither the Obama nor McCain campaigns have control over such domains. At the same time, neither the Democratic Party nor the GOP has control over those domains.
On YouTube, MySpace, and Facebook, Obama dominates over McCain. There is a major gorge between support for Obama and support for McCain.
On MySpace, McCain has almost 56,000. But, that is mere peanuts compared to Obama’s 401,000+ friends.
On Facebook, McCain has 152,570 supporters listed. But, that is a mere grain of sand compared to Obama’s 1,040,185. Take a close look at these numbers. Is that proof enough that Obama has a very sharp edge over McCain when it comes to the Internet?
If not, take a look at the YouTube figures.
McCain has 208 videos posted with 3,700,000 million views. In the case of Obama, there are 1,100 videos posted with at least 53,400,000 views.
It is consistent with Obama getting sizable support from younger voters. Also, Obama seems to have recognized the potential of the Internet. A good amount of donations to the Obama campaign was secured through the Internet.
Luckily, Republicans that know their way online have stepped up to help out McCain.
However, there is the realistic aspect of things. Even though Obama is more popular than McCain on the Internet, voter conversion is another thing.
You could have one billion supporters online. But, will they be voting for Obama this November? Also, how many of them are old enough to vote? Of those old enough to vote, how many of them are registered to vote?
Of course McCain supporters are far outnumbered by Obama supporters on the Internet; but, the Internet is what it is, the Internet.
It mirrors Obama’s popularity with younger voters. Of course Obama has been enjoying support from them. But, will they turn out to vote for him this November?
But keep in mind, McCain still has problems of his own.
