Two years ago David Reiner, 61, fled Toronto after allegedly stealing $800,000 from area daycare centres. On Wednesday Reiner was arrested as he stepped off a plane landing at Toronto's Pearson International Airport.
The accountant is alleged to have taken from 21 daycare centres that used him as a bookkeeper. He was charged in September 2006 of the crime after he took off leaving behind his family. His wife and two daughters live in High Park.
CBC's The Fifth Estatehad recently interviewed Reiner in Uganda. The man had shown up in that nation after spending time in Kenya. According to the Hana Gartner interview Reiner was ready to return to Canada and face justice for the crimes he had committed.
At the time Reiner had spent all of his money. Canadian authorities in Kampala had refused to give him a plane ticket.
Reiner flew home with the The Fith Estate team and surrendered to the police on arrival.
After Reiner had fled after Toronto daycare centres began to notice discrepancies on their books that he had taken care of. After his flight from Canada it was discovered that 21 centres had missing funds ranging from $5,000 to $145,000.
Reiner will appear in a Toronto courtroom at 10 a.m. Thursday.
