Presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona has issued a $300 million challenge to create a better car battery.
It is known that presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona and presumed Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois are both battling for the crucial swing voting bloc of Independents. Not long ago, McCain had addressed the environment. Now, there is something that one probably would not expect to come out of McCain. Perhaps, that might make McCain even more unpopular with the rest of the GOP.

Yes, there are still many people within the GOP that are not thrilled to have McCain as their presidential nominee. In this regard, this is pretty much linked with gas prices and the economy. At the same time, it may look like McCain is trying to up one on Sir Richard Branson.

Early last year, Branson set up the “Virgin Earth Challenge.” $25 million would be awarded to any individual or group who can create a design feasible for commercial use for maintaining stability to Earth’s climate. However, it would have to have long term effects. At the same time, it should not have harmful effects.

McCain is offering a $300 million prize for a better car battery. He said he is looking for something that can go beyond the current hybrid cars. This is McCain’s response to the rise in oil prices; he is offering a $300 million prize to any person or group to come up with a better car battery.

In addition, McCain said that it must fit like any other battery. He added that the battery needs to be cost effective. Plus, McCain wants the battery that is available to be used in either hybrid or electric cars.

At the same time, McCain would issue his “Clean Car Challenge” to the carmakers to come up with vehicles that give off no carbon. People who buy such cars would end up getting tax credits up to $5,000.

In short, McCain has issued a hefty challenge.

But this is quite interesting. Branson is offering $25 million for a commercially feasible design that can reduce carbon emissions in the climate. McCain is offering $300 million for a better car battery.

On a personal note, that is funny in an ironic way.

Brilliant idea, I hope somebody gives him a gold medal for it, we will be getting more ideas like it if he becomes president. I don't know how he thinks this idea will solve the oil price crisis and it doesn't involve the main parties in the crisis, just a random solution in the air.

This is an absolutely outstanding idea and I have to applaud McCain for being so forward-thinking. Kennedy put forward the challenge to put a man on the moon, but this could have the potential to be even bigger, freeing civilization from the chains that attach us to OPEC and foreign oil industry.

    Bravo McCain.

I kinda find it a bit funny in a sense.

Branson offers $25M for a commercial design to combat climate change. McCain offers $300M for a new type of car battery.

A good mix of walking and public transportation. Especially with the bigger cities. This is why I like Philadelphia and Washington DC.

I welcome such a battery but there's no knee jerk approval from this quarter. He's free to do what he wishes with his own money.

An affordable battery that would significantly extend the range of electric vehicles would sell like hot cakes and require no $300 million gift.

Does this mean he divorces himself from G.W. and his oil patch friends?

That implies that there is such a relationship. Look over the past few years, you'll see that McCain and Bush have butted heads more than a time or two on issues.
