Lauren Child, British author and illustrator of children’s books, has signed a partnership with UNESCO. It will be launched officially on 25 June in London.
On Wednesday, June 25, UNESCO will officially announce that it has formed a partnership with British children’s author Lauren Child. Child is the author of That Pesky Rat which is a best-seller.

The royalties from the sale of this book will be donated by Child and her publisher Hachette Children’s Books for the next three years to UNESCO’s Programme for the Education of Children in Need.

An enhanced edition of “That Pesky Rat” will be released this month in the United Kingdom. The funds generated by book sales will finance different UNESCO-supported projects for children in need, such as the Renacimiento Foundation for street children in Mexico City (Mexico). The new edition of “That Pesky Rat” will contain stories of children in the Foundation’s care.

“My Life is a Story” is a campaign initiated by Ms Child to collect stories of children around the world and will be part of this new partnership. At first these life stories, written or recorded, will come from children participating in projects affiliated with UNESCO’s Programme for the Education of Children in Need. Later, schools will be invited to take part in the project and their pupils encouraged to produce texts.

The aim is to enable children from very different backgrounds to become aware of their common destiny. A selection of these life experiences will be made available on line.

Koïchiro Matsuura, Director General of UNESCO has decided to name Lauren Child a UNESCO Artist for Peace.

Ms Child’s books have been translated into 30 different languages and have sold millions of copies globally and her characters Charlie and Lola have inspired a popular television series.
