article imageIn 2050, human-robot sex relationships will become a reality?

By Chris V. Thangham     Jun 22, 2008 in Technology
David Levy, author of the book Love + sex with robots, says robots will be able to respond to human emotion and even have sex with humans within the next four decades.
Levy is considered an Artificial Intelligence guru and has written a previous book on robots called “Robots Unlimited”. In his book “Love + Sex with Robots”, he first addresses love with a robot and then considers actually having sex with one. Readers may be skeptical at first, but he says just like humans falling in love with one another, or loving pets and motorcycles, humans will naturally fall in love with robots. He says it only needs a short emotional step.
Levy's book is available through Amazon for $9.99.
One of the Amazon reviews says the following:
Here’s a prediction that’ll make you squirm: In the future, people will fall in love with robots. Robots will not be cold, predictable machines, but actual lovers — precocious, sexy, and remarkably humanlike in appearance. Humans will even marry robots in certain obliging jurisdictions. Someday, people will have sex with robots. And not just cold, mechanical sex that barely incites a feeble meep-meep-meep from your robot lover: No, we’re talking about real elbow-pads-and-helmets sex. Electrifying sex!
The Japanese are creating advanced robots on a regular basis; they already have robots to take care of elderly, and some robots can speak like humans and even look like them. So, love with robots and having sex with them will be the next step according to David Levy.
He spoke at the international conference held last week at the University of Maastricht in the south east of Netherlands where he told the audience:
"... when there are robots that have also emotions, personality, consciousness. They can talk to you, they can make you laugh. They can ... say they love you just like a human would say 'I love you', and say it as though they mean it ..."
Levy said there are already sex dolls on the market, so robots as sex toys will be the next step, likely available within the next five years.
These robots may have electronic speech and sensors and will make “nice sounds” when a human caresses their “erogenous zones” according to Levy.
In my opinion, sex toys may be a possibility but to be a sex partners it requires more skill (especially with conversation skills, which will be a main obstacle for the sex robot producers). With scientists working on artificial personality, emotion and consciousness, sex robots may become a reality soon claims Levy. One researcher has created a robot that displays 77 human behavior patterns.
If Levy’s predictions are true, it can only get weirder in the future. Scientists may replicate every single character trait of humans, but love will be the hardest one, if not impossible, to replicate in my opinion.
