The violence taking place in Zimbabwe up before the June 27 runoff elections does nothing but escalate even further. New targets for execution are the youths of the MDC.
The violence in Zimbabwe continues as the soldiers and Zanu-PF militiamen of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe continue hunting down and brutally executing members and supporters of the opposition group known as the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of the MDC and opposition candidate, had won the elections. But, he did not get the outright majority required for a runoff election.
Mugabe has said that he will not cede power to Tsvangirai, regardless of the runoff election. From the elections to the date of the runoff which is June 27, Zimbabwe has been plagued with violence.
Recently, it was family members of MDC leaders that were targeted for brutal assassinations. Still, they are targeted. Now, attacks and executions have extended towards the MDC youth activists. Victims had their skulls smashed. However, it also extended to their lips and genitals being cut off.
At the same time, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown called on Mugabe demanding he let international rights observes into the country for the runoff elections.
This continues to give off the indication of Mugabe’s desperation to remain in power. One teacher vowed to leave the country of Mugabe ends up winning the runoff election. According to a Western diplomat, Mugabe is desperate and does not care what the international community thinks.
