Picasso’s “Sylvette” painting was sold at a record amount of $6.5 million at a private auction. It is the most expensive painting ever sold in Australia.
An anonymous buyer paid this record amount for the 1954 oil painting “Sylvette” on canvas at the Deutscher-Menzies auction house.

The owner Rod Menzies told AFP that it was a historic day for Australia to sell the legend’s painting. The painting shown in the top picture is one of Picasso's paintings; the sold painting's picture is in the above link.

The painting “Sylvette” is one of several paintings of Picasso based on Sylvette David, who worked near his painting studio. He was captivated by her face and she inspired him to draw more than dozens of paintings of her.

Menzies purchased this painting at a New York auction two years ago for $4.6 million.

The previous record for a painting in Australia was Brett Whiteley’s “The Olgas for Ernest Giles”, which was sold for AU$3.48 million last year.
