Yet again, current US President, George Bush may not have come up with the best choice of words for the right situation, when recently he commented on French leader, Nicolas Sarkozy's wife as being "a good choice"
He will be remembered for a multitude of things - when we think of George Bush in future years, we will link words with his enlightening persona, yet a particular phrase has also been added in recent days as something, or indeed, someone being a "good choice." As someone would comment on a new car as being a good choice of model, are we to assume this is what he had in mind when he told the French President that his new wife, was a "good choice."
What indeed constitutes a good choice of wife? A house, or an area which seems profitable and accommodating maybe a good choice, but a person? Particularly a wife? To use a remark such as this, surely Mr Bush is referring to the lovely Mrs Sarkozy as being nothing but a possession.
Yet he was a puppy dog, with a naughty twinkle in his eye when he lavished praise over the French President's wife,
Carla Bruni. In amongst his bumbling phrases, he described the immaculately presented first lady of France as being "a really smart, capable woman".
With a nudge and a wink in that traditional Texan way, he said to Mr Sarkozy,
"I can see why you married her..."
The recent friction over Iraq between the two mighty countries fizzled into complete non existence as to the two old men laughed over praising banter, in which has been noted as Bush's last visit to France as President of the US. The light feel of the conversation between to two most powerful men in the world, was on first name terms, shunting the UK aside briefly and calling France, "America's first friend." Not surprising when french critics and media alike had dubbed Mr Sarkozy as "Sarkozy l'Americain" (Sarkozy the American).
Joking aside, Mr Bush had serious words to say about his French counterpart,
"He's an interesting guy. He is full of energy. He's full of wisdom. He tells me what's on his mind. And every time I've met with him we've had very meaningful discussions."
Quite warmly felt words by a man who forgets that he is talking about the President of France and remarks rather like someone remembering an old school chum. Mr Sarkozy nodded, we have been friends for 200 years, actually.
Sarkozy has to be admired to a definite degree. Since emerging before his public almost a year ago as their President, he had gone out of his way to build strong, long lasting bridges between the US and France, despite the rifts drafted up by his predecessor, Jacques Chirac, yet today, it was plain to see that the days of darkness had gone for good as these two friends looked warmly at each other at the press conference held for Bush and Sarkozy at the Elysee Palace.
During the meeting, they made important issues primary on their agenda, including, Iran's nuclear ambitions and co-operation over Afghanistan. It was clear to see that former tensions over the crisis in Iraq were fading fast. It will be interesting to see how Mr Bush will reflect on his relationship with the UK as he flies into London today to meet fumbling Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. It could well be a far cry from the party atmosphere felt last week in France...
