Czech president, Vaclav Klaus, says the Lisbon Treaty project is over, and the ratification of what some call a renamed "European Constitution" must now be stopped.
It would have altered the way the European Union (EU) functions, created a more significant European Parliament, legally bound the Charter of Fundamental Rights, and even allow for the creation of a full time President of the Europe - a job
Tony Blair was being touted for. But on June 14th 2008, Ireland (the only EU member of the 27 state Union to even hold a referendum) rejected the treaty. That decision has lead to a lot of questions regarding the future of the Treaty. The Czech Republic made their stance clear by
echoing Vaclav Klaus' in the senate.
Klaus wrote on his own website that;
"The Lisbon treaty project ended with the Irish voters' decision and its ratification cannot continue,"
He also called the results of the Irish vote a,
"victory of freedom and reason over artificial elitist projects and European bureaucracy,"
The Czech Republic is one of nine skeptical countries that have yet to ratify the treaty.
