As winter darkness sets in at the U.S. research base in Antarctica a last shipment containing 16,500 condoms was delivered last month. The McMurdo base station offers their residents the safe sex protectors free of charge.
During the long winter only a small staff of about 125 scientists remain at the compound. It is still the largest community in Antarctica.
Winter at the bottom of the Earth means constant darkness. The sun will rise again on August 20 when the population will increase to around 1,000.
Supply flights are halted during the bitter cold not resuming until September.
