Canadian Captain Jonathan Snyder died while on a night-time patrol west of Kandahar on Saturday night. A member of the 1st Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton Snyder fell into a well called a kariz.
Snyder was bogged down with at least 34 kilograms of equipment on including his flak vest when he fell into the kariz. That weight hindered him from being able to stay afloat as his patrol attempted to rescue him from the well that may have been as deep as 20 metres.

Snyder was rushed to the NATO hospital at Kandahar Airfield after he was taken out of the well where he was pronounced dead.

Snyder was both a mentor and a role model to the members of the Afghan National Army. His service served both the lives of Canadians and Afghans in his most recent field work.

He leaves behind his parents and fiancee.
