Rev. Jesse Jackson said Saturday that he believes that Hillary Rodham Clinton would make a strong vice president. He does believe that Barack Obama should take his time deciding who he wants to have as his running mate.
Rev. Jesse Jackson said Saturday that he believes that Hillary Clinton
has made a "powerful case" as a candidate for the office of vice president.
After Clinton gave her speech in Washington Saturday ending her campaign for the office of the president Jackson made his comments. Clinton told her supporters in her speech that they needed to unite behind Obama now.
In a
phone interview with the Associated Press Jackson said,
"While clearly the choice of a running mate is his and that right should be honored, I thought she made a powerful case for her eligibility.
"As he surveys the field, it must be someone who is compatible with him philosophically, someone who is loyal to his agenda and someone who brings a constituency that matters and the capacity to become the next president, as the Constitution requires should disaster strike."
Jackson also said Clinton meets those requirements. He added,
"She may not be the only one who does, but she certainly does."
Jackson said,
"She starts with 18 million votes. She starts having gained a following among Latinos and she has substantial support among African Americans. ... Women will be looking to her place in the scheme of things."
Jacqueline Jackson, Jackson's wife had been a supporter of Clinton during the primaries while Jackson had supported Obama.
Jackson has been asked how he and his wife are discussing Obama's winning the Democratic nomination. Jackson said,
"My wife is ecstatic about his victory."
Interesting that Jackson seems to be in favor of Clinton becoming the vice president.
Would Obama and Clinton make a good team?
