Angel Arce Torres, 78, was hit by a car while trying to cross a street and the car that hit him did not stop, nor did 10 other vehicles. Also, people walking on the sidewalk did nothing to help Torres.
A Honda hit 78-year-old Torres while he was trying to cross the street last Friday, leaving him in the middle of the road, crumpled and bleeding.

Four people did call 911, but after watching the video, it is clear that not only did the Honda that hit Torres just keep going, but nine or ten other cars passed the elderly man by and witnesses on the sidewalk, stood and watched and did nothing to help Torres.

As Torres lay in the street, nine cars passed him without stopping. More than 40 seconds went by before anyone even stepped off the sidewalk to get a closer look. But no one went over to Torres' body to try to help or even divert traffic.

Finally, after about a minute and a half, a police car responding to a different call happened upon the scene and an ambulance was called.

The police released the video (seen here) on Wednesday to ask for people to call if they had any information about the Honda that hit Torress and kept going and a Hartford Police Chief, Daryl Roberts, expressed his outrage at the news conference, saying, "we no longer have a moral compass."

He also says that it is an "indication of what we have become" when a person can be "laying in the street and people just drive around him."

People just do not want to get involved and Torres' son, Angel Arce Torres Jr, cannot even bring himself to watch the video and says, "I can't see it. Even if you see a dog or an animal out in the street, you help them. And that hurts."

Torres is reportedly in critical condition at Hartford Hospital.

I have to say that watching the video is horrible and one of the most chilling things I have seen in a long time.

Agreed. I cannot believe so many people drove around this guy without doing anything.

It is astounding. I mean what kind of person doesn't help a victim, but even worse, he was 78..my god.

Not to mention the tool who hit the guy and sped off. It's really sad.

Hartford Police Chief Daryl Roberts said that: “We no longer have a moral compass.” Roberts said that people seemed to have no regard for each other. So far, Torres is alive and remains in critical condition.

Why the need to start another thread on the same story? Has anything been added here that could not logically have been attached to the previous thread?

Unless the author was unaware, it seems contemptuous of those previously commenting.

I agree. I hate sad stories, but sometimes something just insists that it be written. Showing scum for what they are, is also sometimes a good thing.

They say the town is ashamed and embarrassed by the witnesses not helping...they should be and they should remember that feeling when they have a chance to help someone..

Actually I never saw it because it didn't pop up when the key words were entered, meaning I must have used different ones.... then again, I guess that is why the group function exists, isn't it?

I saw this last night and was totally floored. I was heartbroken but not surprised because it is the american way.

my son flew by himself for the first time on tuesday - the autistic boy. he had the rules and knew what to do.

we watched from a far as he made his way in line and he politely asked a man in line if he was in the correct line for boarding....the guy was an ASS to my son. I can see where people get themselves tazed for had it not been for my hubby, i'd have gone through security! I was heartbroken and let down by fellow humankind.

I'm not surprised they hit the guy and i'm not surprised the others didn't stop. People don't care.

Why don't you write stories then you can see how challenging it is when you enter key words and do not get a hit to see if another author has written a story just like it?

It seems contemptuous of you to make such rude comments to authors when you have no idea with regards to writing an article in the first place.

Obviously justifies the story and how lacking some people can be when it comes to having a sense of compassion instead of biting first. Geeze.

Some don't but from the reactions to those few, by so many, some still do.

I commented on the other story yesterday.

I sent an email to wolfman about it and he has left a comment in the other report. Wolfman is from the area.

I am the one who grouped them together and I don't think it is really that big of a deal because it does and will happen again.

I think when I see something that has been written about already just group them together and don't make a fuss about it.

I don't believe any writer here ever intends to "steal" a story from another writer.

I know Picasso. I have seen many stories I have written, written about again the next day or even two or three days later.

I simply put it under the category of "shit happens" and move along. No reason to make a fuss because as it happens to me, I also have missed stories and thought I was the first bringing it to DJ, just to see it later or days later.

"Some" don't understand this, I guess. No big deal. Thanks for grouping it!

We have all been guilty of this in the past. I have had a couple in the past few days that have been on the same topic. It happens. No biggies. :)

That is what I think, if you know a story has been written already just group them and don't say anything.

I don't know of anyone here that would do it intentionally.

It happened, it has happened and it will happen. Move on.

I agree. The threads could have been merged. Hypothetically, there might be a reason to do so if the title of an initial thread may have been considered excessively inflammatory.

There was too great a haste to pounce on my post. And there has been much ink that has added nothing to the discussion. The offending comment was qualified. It was contemptuous of no one.

My apology skeptikool as I should have worded my comment a little differently.
