Just three days before U.S. Air Force Military officials were asked to resign due to the accidental shipping of nuclear warhead fuses to Taiwan in 2006, a case of fully automatic military rifles were swiped from a base in the U.S.
The Hill Air Force Base in Utah came up short as a case containing approximately 12
M-16 fully automatic capable rifles has
been reported missing and is under investigation.
According to the report, the Air Force might have to bone up to the fact that "the case of 12 rifles may have fallen out of a truck during transport."
During the investigation, a witness claimed to have seen a man around 40 or 50 years old loading a "container" into his vehicle. That container may have been the missing M-16 rifles.
Security personnel were dispatched to the area of the missing container just before 4 pm on June 2, 2008.
In a
news report this morning, the diligent efforts of the community and the base proved effective and the case of dangerous weapons had been located. A press statement is scheduled for later today.
Linda Medler, Base Wing Commander, said of the mission to reclaim the military weapons that it was "our top priority" and had been asking for assistance from the public if they have any information.
A case of M-16 rifles running around on the streets is not something that equates to the selling of stolen merchandise like televisions or other electronics. The likelihood that these will end up in the hands of unlicensed criminals is great.
Two months ago, F-16 fighter jets from Hill Air Force Base opened fire on United States Army soldiers during a night training mission. The Army soldiers were in a rental SUV when the jets opened fire.
