Last night confirmed what many Australians already knew: our government is in the dark. This time, however, it was due to a power failure.
For the second night running, the House of Representatives was plunged into
darkness because of a power failure, but in true politician style, the speaker at the time, Labor MP Jim Turnour, didn't miss a beat.
"Oh we've had an accident ... we're standing here in the semi-darkness but I will continue on," he told parliament. "It's mood lighting."
One witty politician from the backbenchers suggested they were reducing their carbon footprint.
The first blackout occurred on Monday night, during Victorian MP
Jason Wood's "genetically modified orgasms" speech.
In hindsight, perhaps it was this "mood lighting" that effected Mr Wood so much, however, Mr Turnour didn't appear to suffer the same affliction in his speech on drought relief for Australia farmers.
