Bombing At Danish Embassy In Pakistan

By KJ Mullins     Jun 2, 2008 in World
An embassy worker is dead this morning along with at least seven other people after a car bombing attack near the Danish embassy in Islamabad. There were about 30 people who were in wounded in the blast.
The embassy and several vehicles were damaged when a car bomb exploded outside. The attacker drove between the embassy and an office building around noon Monday. It is thought that all of those who were killed were outside of the embassy walls at the time of the attack.
There was damage reported on part of the embassy wall. A building that houses offices of a UN-funded non-governmental organization was also damaged during the attack.
Asim Mukhtar, who works near the site of the blast, told the BBC that the air pressure there was "immense".
"It was like I was stuck between two speeding cars or between two moving trains. My door which was half-open slammed shut. Everything moved," he said.
"We ran to the roof and saw some black smoke rising. After one minute we heard the sounds of ambulances."
Danish embassies around the world have been on high alert since a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad was reprinted in newspapers in February. The cartoon has been deemed offensive to Islam. When they were first published in September 2005 they sparked worldwide protests.
Al-Qaeda is being blamed for the attack after Ayman al-Zawahri denounced the cartoons in a recent video.
Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller said the attack was "totally unacceptable". He told Danish TV: "I of course condemn this attack. It is terrible that terrorists commit such acts."
This is the first attack in Islamabad since March 15 when an Italian restaurant was targeted. The eating establishment is a frequent dining destination for foreigners in the city.
Security is now being tightened at all government and key buildings within Islamabad. Norway has closed its embassy as a result of the blast.
Danish citizens have been advised not to travel to Pakistan.
