article imageGet Ready For Possible Taxi Fare Increases In Toronto

By KJ Mullins     Jun 1, 2008 in Business
Come August taxis in Toronto will be charging a little more for a ride across town if a proposal passes this week with the city's Licensing and Standards Committee. The pick up rate will go up to $4 instead of the $3 we pay now.
As gas prices soar taxi drivers are seeing their wallets shrink when they go to the gas pumps. The fare raise reflects that cost. Cabbies are seeing an increase of operating costs of $400 to $600 a year because of the over increasing crude oil costs.
The increase will also shorten the distance that each quarter is charged from 155 meters instead of the 170 meters that it currently is.
The increase will only slightly raise the fares though, making a $10 trip go to $11.25. This is the first increase asked for since 2005. In that time fuel has increased by 28 percent.
It will take time for the cabs to have their meters changed and then taken to the city to have a tamper proof lock installed.
