While China is recovering from the 7.5 magnitude earthquake, it seems that it may have to deal with another issue that could add to a potential PR nightmare as it hosts the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Within the past few months, China has had to deal with many issues that could spell disastrous as it hosts the 2008 Summer Olympics this August in its capital of Beijing. Initially the three main issues were: Darfur, Tibet, and the tainted food.
Other emerging issues were Zimbabwe, Beijing’s pollution, China’s record of human rights, and the treatment of North Korean refugees. The issue of North Korean refugees emerged during the Olympic torch relay throughout Seoul, South Korea.
The two recent issues are Burma and the earthquake that rocked China.
Now, there is a march going through the streets of Hong Kong. It is almost June 4th, the anniversary of the bloody and violent crackdown in Tiananmen Square. There is the possibility that live broadcasts from Tiananmen Square could be blacked out and barred during the duration of the games.
On June 1, demonstrators marched throughout Hong Kong demanded that the Chinese government apologize to the victims of the 1989
Tiananmen Square Massacre. They have also demanded an independent investigation into the event as well.
Hong Kong could possibly play an interesting role in the outcome of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Tiananmen Square is considered one of the bloodiest events in 20th century Chinese history. It had brought forth condemnation from the international community.
