article imageBarak to Olmert: Step Down As Prime Minister Or Else

By Can Tran     May 28, 2008 in World
Recently, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has issued an ultimatum to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in regards to the corruption scandal.
Amidst the corruption scandal that surrounds current Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barack issued an ultimatum on Wednesday, May 28. Barak has demanded that Olmert step down from his position as the PM of Israel. If Olmert does not comply, Barak has promised to use his power to bring down Israel’s government.
This scandal may hurt the peace process that is trying to be built with both Syria and Palestine. Recently, Olmert has been painted in an unsavory light in the scandal. However, Olmert has refused to stand down. So far, Olmert proclaims his innocence and said if indicted, he will resign his post.
But, that did not seem to satisfy Barak. Barak doubts that Olmert can focus on the country while dealing with the criminal investigation. He said Olmert must “disconnect” himself fro the government.
Barak even gave suggestions that Olmert could turn over leadership to someone else from his Kadima Party. While a deadline has not been set by Barak, it still puts Olmert in a very difficult situation. This has very much hurt Olmert’s chances to remain in power. He even risks losing majority in Israel’s parliament.
It is unknown what effect this will have on the talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. However, this incident could end up as an issue in regards to the 2008 US Presidential elections.
