article imageDuct Tape, the Newest School Villain

By Samantha A. Torrence     May 20, 2008 in Lifestyle
Duct Tape is like the Force, it has a light side, a dark side, and holds the universe together. It also can catch sneaky teens violating curfew on school field trips.
What student on a field trip is not familiar with the old tried, tested, and true method of catching curfew violators, Duct Tape? It seems one boy in Ohio became scared that the Duct Tape on the door trick would keep him from escaping in a fire. That is a healthy respect for the binding force of the Universe.
Mark Hummel ( if this were Hamill it would have been even more ironic) became panicked when his door was "sealed" with duct tape by a chaperone on a choir field trip. This practice of putting tape on the door and checking in the morning has been used for years to see if any student attempts to sneak from their room for nefarious reasons. Sylvia Keeler, Hummel's mother, says she may file charges. Another mother became heated during a school board hearing saying the action panicked her son on a trip to Chicago.
School officials reassured the mothers that the duct tape would not have prevented escape in the event of an emergency and served as a tool to keep children safe.
