Barack Obama was taking a tour of a Chrysler plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, on Wednesday and a reporter, WXYZ's Peggy Agar, asked a question of Obama and he responded "Hold on one second, sweetie."
This created a buzz among reporters on the presidential campaign trail and was reported on by WXYZ as well different news organizations and has being picked up along the blogoshere.

I see opinion pieces comparing this with Hillary Clinton's remark about Martin Luther King and Lyndon Johnson and saying he was "flirting."

The term sexism has been thrown about as well.

All the fuss being made of her "sweetie" remarks got to the point where he called the reporter in question and apologized for calling her sweetie.

"Hi Peggy. This is Barack Obama. I'm calling to apologize on two fronts. One was you didn't get your question answered and I apologize. I thought that we had set up interviews with all the local stations. I guess we got it with your station but you weren't the reporter that got the interview. And so, I broke my word. I apologize for that and I will make up for it.

"Second apology is for using the word 'sweetie.' That's a bad habit of mine. I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front. Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next."

You can listen to the voicemail yourself, right here. (Right top)

My first reaction on seeing this story was "so what?"

Having lived in the south I have heard "babe", "hon", "sweetie" and a whole slew of other terms that are not meant to be offensive, they are simply a manner of speaking.

I may have problems with Obama's stands on issues or his associations, but I think everyone has made a mountain out of a molehill here for no other reason than to bash Obama for doing something that in my opinion, was actually endearing.

It was mentioned in The Swamp that reporter Jim Rutenberg from the New York Times Political blog reported that Obama did this in Pennsylvania once to a female factory worker.

Oh, the shame!

Have we become so hyper-sensitive today that a simple slip of the tongue from a man obviously used to calling females "sweetie," not meant disrespectfully, but meant as a term of endearment, causes this much of a fuss in the media?

Are there not actual issues that people can discuss?

(Note- Anyone who reads my articles on a regular basis, knows that I do not favor Obama and have plenty of problems with his issues, but I find that in this instance, the media and much of the blogosphere has been completely unfair to him.)

Right On! I had to try to stop my eyes from rolling so far that they turned upside down when I heard about this.

I say sweety, hun, dear, all the time! My gosh it was almost as if he said " hold on a minute c*nt, I'll answer your question."

I think anyone who is offended by this should take my recommendation for a great colonoscopy place, it may help them remove the stick from their ass.

After a Mild Apology, probably caused by Michelle 's 2x4 application to Barry, he is now RANTING along with his puppets led by Daschle over W's remarks in Israel about some obscure Senator from the past claiming that " had I had an opportunity to talk Hitler out of it, Poland might not have been invaded" Something that the Thin Skinned and weak spined Barry Ho and surrogates have taken it Personally .. So reviewing the facts which seem to Confuse the Loons of Lake Hope:
    1) W made NO mention of Barry Ho..
    2) Barry Ho in one of his empty Suites Oracles did say that he's hold Diplomatic discourses with ROGUE Nations with no Conditions..
SO if the Shoe fits.. what's he got BUNIONS??????

Peggy Agar was not offended about being called "sweetie"

What she was not happy about was him not answering her question.

Whats the BIG DEAL about being called darlin' or sweetie?

No clue Picasso. It takes a very warped individual to take offense at something that is meant as an endearing term, IMO.

I would much rather be called darlin', sweetie, or my dear, than some kind of a female animal from the canine species. LOL

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, thats where we disagree. I spent 40+ years perfecting the art of bitchiness, so to me that is an extreme compliment.

Yes, but the problem with that S.D. is if I disagree with you and say that you are a b----, I might get suspended but if I say "but darlin" [with my teeth clenched] nothing will happen to me even though I might be thinking the B. word. LOL :-)
Which of course I never would, well maybe to some but not you.

I can understand why woman would f be offended at being called "sweetie." Where I come from, "Sweetie" as a term of endearmeant is reserved for children who happen to be cute and not to adults who one considers as their equal.

She should be so lucky to be called sweetie.

She is a good reporter here in lower Mich.
She wasn't upset about being called that and didn't even know there was so much controversy going on about it.
When she woke up she had Obama's apology on her answering machine.

Ah, that's cool on her part. Still, his pr people (or his wife??) shouldn't have forced the issue. Its so silly because it isn't disrespectful.

I don't know, sweets, hon, darlin, etc. its all kindness. I guess in fairness, they have to but man oh man, it drives me bonkers.

Just for the record you ladies may call me bitch anytime *grins*

Cynthia I am glad to hear she wasn't offended.

Divine, I guess you have to listen to tone of voice to derive the connotation of the word, I can see how it could be patronizing but I didn't hear it that way from him.

Peggy Agar was just on WXYZ news again and the only thing that she still doesn't like is she still doesn't have an answer to her question to Obama.

The only ones making it a big deal are other sources besides Agar and WXYZ Detroit.

Neither do I. It all stems from hyper-sensitivity and is quite silly. The fact that the reported wasn't offended at all should have been enough.

Exactly my point, you would have sworn he was deliberately offensive after reading some of the ridiculousness some people have written on the topic.
