Last week, the Japanese cherry blossoms were in full bloom in High Park. This week, however, it is all over and done with.
To my big surprise, when I went back to High Park yesterday afternoon, all the cherry blossoms were gone. This was one of the shortest cherry blossom seasons for High Park I have ever seen. I can only guess that the rain and the wind have drastically shortened the season. Instead of the typical two to two and a half weeks, we have hardly had ten days.
Because the leaves of the trees are now still young, the typical somber, depressing atmosphere is not yet there. Instead, the trees have a subtle reddish-pink glow that is quite pleasant and that contrasts admirably with the dark, nearly black colour of the trunk and the branches.
This is a stage in the life-cycle of the cherry blossom trees that will also not last much more than a few weeks. After this, they will spread their typical gloom-and-doom atmosphere. It is definitely worth the trip to see the trees before they reach that stage.
