In seemingly spontaneous fashion, as many as 10 billion critters can suddenly swarm the air and carpet the ground, blazing destructive paths that bring starvation and economic ruin.
What makes ten billion locusts suddenly swarm the air and carpet the ground, blazing destructive paths that bring starvation and economic ruin?

Iain Couzin of Princeton University led a team of scientists in the exploration of this question, their answer.

"Cannibalism," said Couzin, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton.

The May 8 online edition of Current Biology contains the article by Couzin and colleagues who say that the collective motion of locusts is driven by "cannibalistic interactions."

"Cannibalism is rife within marching bands of locusts," said Couzin.

Desert locusts regularly dine on available vegetation, but individual locusts have been observed to feed on other live locusts or cadavers. This behavior and its effect upon the group, however, have not previously been studied.

"No one knew until now that cannibalistic interactions are directly responsible for the collective motion exhibited by these bands," added Couzin, whose graduate student, Sepideh Bazazi, is the lead author on the paper.

In zoology, cannibalism is defined as occurring when any species consumes members of its own kind.

Young locusts turn to consuming their own when the food supply necessary for supporting the population starts to dwindle. Driven by hunger and starved for essential nutrients such as protein and salt, young locust "nymphs" will nip at each other.

The behaviour escalates as those under siege react by running from the aggressors. Others then become jittery and simply seek to put space between them and any locust approaching from behind and that is how one aggressive interaction can lead to another and collectively start a vast migration.

The pressure to move arise as the activity intensifies, as the biting and ominous approach of others increases.

The researchers studied immature, flightless locusts and developed computerized motion analysis to automatically track the insects marching in an enclosed arena.

These locust nymphs can gather in large mobile groups called bands. They can stretch over tens of miles, devouring vegetation as they march. They inevitably precede the flying swarms of adult locusts.

"Once they take flight, locust control is extremely expensive and ineffective," Couzin said. "So understanding when, where and why the bands of juvenile locusts form is crucial for controlling locust populations."

Over the years, locusts have invaded up to one-fifth of the Earth's surface. They have contributed to major humanitarian crises in areas such as Darfur and Niger.

Understanding the movement of locusts also is part of a growing inquiry by scientists into an area known as group dynamics. With locusts, researchers have been seeking to understand how the group seems to move with the synchronized perfection of the Rockettes when there is no centralized leader and individuals can barely see beyond a few neighbors on either side.

Flocks of birds, schools of fish and swarms of insects frequently exhibit such complex and coordinated collective motion and present a great opportunity to understand how local interactions can lead to vast collective behavior, the scientists said.

The research was supported by Princeton University, the Royal Society of London, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and the Australian Research Council.

Looking at war history, locusts are not alone in devouring their own.

I'm sure their would have been much less death during the Biblical, locust plagues, had these insects been placed on the menu. They are probably protein-loaded. I should think....fried to a crisp, and savored with a garlic or chocolate dip.

Locusts sound a great deal like Muslims.

Now now, no need for that. Locusts sound like locusts, not like a certain ethnic group. Wow, even a story about nature is somehow being turned into a religious comment.

There are (quite seriously) far more important matters to discuss, such as Al Gore's lies and the utter idiocy of ethanol.

Nobody was having a "debate", an off-the-cuff sarcastic remark was made which should not be taken as any kind of personal attack by any adult human being.

Seems to me there's a blog around here somewhere where people were attacking each other pretty viciously about religious matters in a quite serious fashion, however...

Haven't had snake, but wouldn't pass it up - if not on the endangered list. Have had eel. Delicious! Jellied eel was popular at one time in English pubs. Very good smoked, also.

You remind me of that finicky eater who would never eat offal - nothing from the animal's insides.

I don't know if any of you have ever heard of Tony Campolo.

I took a course with him for one semester in 1989.

He related this story to us during one of the classes. Please keep in mind that Tony Campolo is a committed Christian.

There was one time when Tony was a sponsor of a fund-raising and awareness dinner for well-to-do people who expressed an interest in donating to charity; the charity in question this time happened to be African relief.

Plates were several hundred dollars each.

Campolo, who is a renowned orator, gave the main address of the evening.

He got up before the gathered people, who were in the midst of the main course, and he began to address them by saying, "Last night alone, 4,000 African children starved to death."

As orators do, he looked up at that point, to make eye contact with the gathered people. He noticed that not a single eye was on him. All were engrossed in their magnificent feast.

So he continued, and said: "And not one of you gives a flying fuck."

He looked back up. All eyes were on him now, and many a mouth was agape.

Campolo then continued, and he said: "Because it's far more important to you that I said the word 'fuck' than it is that last night, 4,000 African children starved to death!"

I'll leave it to you all to figure out why I just posted the above.

Where it went, I'm sorry it happened to such a nice man and well versed writer's comment section.

    Thanks,

Actually, there are no winners. Other than my comments about survival training, I've stayed off of this thread intentionally, but followed it in fascination.

I do have a few thoughts that I want to interject, but there are a few things that need to be clarified first.
    @ Jedediah Redman
You seem to have closed ranks to exclude anybody who thinks differently.
    By the way.
Try not to see what ol' jed says as an insult.
He is just not interested in going along to get along. He always says just what he thinks.
Ol' jed didn't come here to make friends--nor to make enemies...

You've made that quite clear on more than a few ocassions that you
don't care what anyone thinks of you. So be it. There is still no cause for rudeness, and you are consistently so, on nearly every posting that you comment upon.

If you have nothing to say but something degrading, insulting, and demeaning, say nothing. No one cares to hear your bitterness., and you maintain for yourself a reputation as a troublemaker. I think you care more than you actually wish to admit, and rather enjoy sharing the misery myself, but that is my opinion.

    @ Brant David McLaughlin
Locusts sound a great deal like Muslims.

How in the HELL that has anything to do with locusts eating each other even I fail to see, and I can generally make connections that other people can't see on references and segues. What could have become an interesting discussion on something science related has devolved, from the first comment, into backbiting and bickering that was completely unnecessary from both sides.

So locusts are mentioned in the Bible. What of it? So is drunkeness, idolotry, incest, rape, murder, war, famine, floods, frogs, goats, sheep...

    @ Raymonty
Little bugs say little things. I am the Eagle of the Internet and I hope that the comments will come up to my level. Name calling is for little kids who have stupid parents.

    What are you, twelve?

    @ Jedediah Redman
And that's why you're referred to as the swarm by people whose IQs are higher than their shoe sizes...

Let me make this abundantly clear, because I'm getting sick and damned tired of hearing it. There is no swarm, there is no conspiracy group off on the sidelines, there is no secret hangout where certain of us sit around and discuss how we're going to come in en masse onto something to make comments. You want to look at a hive mentality, go back to my very, very first day on here when I made my very first comments and came under such a ridiculous onslaught of name calling and accusations that I was someone elses "alter ego" or that I had been "called in" to provide backup. I was called in, I was invited to come to this site, and I was invited to join in. Others have since come along and we've been labeled "the swarm." Let me tell you, there is far just as much "swarming" going on from either side as there is from the other. Look back over this one thread, objectively for a moment, and it's glaringly obvious.

There are others that I haven't pointed out in particular who have had just as much contribution to this...discussion...as others; don't feel that you are being excluded. Chris tried to make a referee's call earlier on in this but no one listened.

The conversation that could have been didn't happen.

Bob, I'm saving you for last. You and I see more eye to eye on many things in regards to natural science than you have any idea, our main point of contention is you point to problems as being man made while I take a more cyclical, life cycle of the planet approach. It is what it is. Neither of us can claim, I'm sure, to be absolute experts on the field, especially in light of how even the experts can't agree.

That being said, I'll close with this. Fantastic article, Bob, and I look forward to more reasonable, analytical debate in the future on other topics of science and nature.

Much can be learned from this thread. It started well, following the first post, and held promise. It then turned into a disappointing mess. Only part of the blame can be attributed to the author of the offensive remark, in my opinion.

After the admonishment and some support of that view, it's seemed the feuding persisted unnecessarily.

Any sort of scoring, of posts, votes or views has become meaningless.

Unless one is scroll-challenged, better at times to just scroll on by,
