Government Sources Say Tsvangirai Won Zimbabwe's Elections

In regards to the post-poll chaos that has swept through Zimbabwe in what many throughout the world fear could become similar to the post-election violence in Kenya, senior government sources say that Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has won the election. Early on, Tsvangirai had insisted that he had won the presidency. Recently, the MDC had won control of Zimbabwe’s parliament.

So far, four weeks have passed ever since the elections. After four weeks, there was no public announcement of the winner.

Many of Zimbabwe’s problems let alone economic problems have been blamed on the incumbent, Robert Mugabe. Mugabe insists that this is all a Western conspiracy against him. Mugabe’s administration has accused the United Nations of being racist and sinister.

Recently, the US top diplomat for Africa, Jendayi Frazer had accused Mugabe of trying to steal the election in order to maintain in control of the country. She also said that Tsvangirai had won the elections fair and square. Tsvangirai also accused Mugabe for delaying the election results in order to stay in power.

To keep Zimbabwe from going down the same path of violence after the elections in Kenya, Frazer urged the leaders of Africa to speak out against possible violence.

Also, there is still the chance that Zimbabwe can be faced with UN sanctions.

While it is said that Tsvangirai has won the presidency by 47% to 43%, the results have yet to remain public. The United Nations is ready to make a move in sending an envoy to Zimbabwe. However, Thabo Mbeki, the current president of South Africa and the current holder of the council presidency has refused to take such an action.

There is still a grim possibility that Zimbabwe could go the same path as Kenya in regards to violence. The UN cited that the violence in Kenya has been the worst humanitarian disaster in the country’s history.
