Rapes More Likely In Two NY Counties
The New York State Department of Criminal Justice has listed two local counties as a place where you are more likely to get raped. Their figures are based on findings between the years 2002 and 2006. Not good news for those of that live in or near there.
Elmira, NY - Two local counties in New York State are listed as being listed as being the most likely places to be raped. Steuben and Chemung counties are ranked as the second and fifth respectively. These statistics are on a ratio of 1 out of every 100,000 people.
WETM 18 asked the District Attorneys of these two counties why these numbers are so high. Chemung County District Attorney Weeden Wetmore answered that he felt that one of the reasons why these numbers are so high is because Chemung county has people that "...not afraid of coming forward and reporting those types of crimes.”
District Attorney Tunny from Steuben county feels that systems are in place in New York that are effectively "...identifying, pursuing, and prosecuting these kinds of situations.”
Seven out of ten rape victims are believed to be friends or acquaintances of the rape victim, this according to a spokesperson with the Rape Crisis of the Southern Tier. Their website offers these tips:
**use caution and trust your instincts
**Know your limits and don't be pressured
**be aware of your surroundings and don't enter isolated areas
**communicate clearly and directly
**don't leave a beverages unattended nor accept a drink from anyone
**stay within a group of your friends and check on each other
** you have the right to say "No!"

Good tips to follow.
Those that do rape need to be reported even if a person had thought of them as a friend.

When I was raped, it was by a so-called friend. I had previously been able to ward off his advances, but he unfortunately cornered me in an isolated place and I was then some 7 months pregnant for my oldest. All I could think of was pretecting my baby, you know?

What a worthless creep!!
I hope that you reported him.

Actually, I didn't. I told my boyfriend (who later became my first hubby) and he just laughed...so I figured that the police wouldn't believe me either. That's how young and naive I was. I was later vindicated, because of an article that someone did on here last year about the national sex offender's registry...and low and behold, I learned I wasn't the only one he harmed this way! He is now considered a pedophile!!!

I guess that is one of the problems with these creeps if they are a "friend" they are excused and not reported. Sounds like he should be locked up.
Do you know yet when the big move will start? I sent you two emails yesterday hope that you received them.
-
Yes, I did receive them...but I had to go look! LOL!
Well, the son-in-law said he wanted to be out of hre today, but since everyone's tapped-out money-wise until payday tomorrow, I may have a 1-2 day repreive. He did take two loads out of here yesterday, and I know that his next day off isn't until Friday...so I've got my fingers crossed that I'll be here until Friday. (Here = internet & DJ! LOLOL!)

Well hopefully it won't be until Friday.
Every additional day that you can be here, DJ, is good and also it will make it fewer days until you can be back here. :-)

The police in the two counties should be ashamed about this statistics and try to have more active patrol.

You would think! Steuben county is one of the largest counties in NY...which might be one of the problems.

deb, always good to report the higher stat areas.
For those who don't know, rape isn't always violent and rarely involves use of weapon...coercion and pressure to engage in unwanted sexual activity is still sexual assault/rape.
The tips are awesome and yes, rape is usually someone introduced to or known in some way by victim (not saying best buds).
I have a niece who was drug raped at a club 10 years ago. one of the guys in her group of friends slipped a drug into her drink and then offered to take her home when she became ill.
9 months later she gave birth to a very hispanic child and she is as whit skin red headed as they come. she was also a virgin.
The guy was a friend of a friend of a friend....but trusted. no one knew him really and couldn't find him. my niece didn't know she was raped or pregnant for 5 months!
Her child? She kept and he has all kinds of health problems and behavior problems.
Great report.

I was date raped too - back in my early 20's. I went on a date with a man that was going to hire me to work for his company. We had a couple drinks and after the 3rd I started feeling sick and asked him to take me home. I was literally throwing up by the time we got to my apt. He offered to take me upstairs and I felt so sick and woozy I agreed - he then followed me into my place, and I vaguely remember him taking my clothes off - I was still retching and the bastard forced himself on me. I was too sick to struggle and I don't remember him leaving. Needless to say I never took the job, and back in those days date rape and being drugged weren't as talked about then. I never told anyone because I thought they would think I just drank too much - but I am 100% positive I was drugged. I still think of that jerk to this day, over 30 years later.

And this is just one of many. No one knows who might be raped, or a child molested, but we can be aware of dangers or the probabilities and adjust our behaviors according.

Thanks, KB. Here is another subject that needs to be in the spotlight every now and then because it is something that we need to know and help educate others about.

Something like this can never be forgotten, Pam...as hard as we would like to. We can work through it, and that's the best we can do. The guy who raped me, I had occasion to see one time about 15 years later and I literally fell to pieces! I cried and cried...but I swore that from that point on, he was NOT going to have that kind of reaction from me!

We need to be careful. Toronto is an extremely safe city, but I am not going to run around naked at 3 am in the back alleys of a drug community, just as I am not going to climb over the fence to say hello to the polar bears in the zoo.

I wouldn't cry if I saw this guy again - I swear I would kick him where it would hurt him the most! I was a very pretty, naive young girl. No, I wasn't a virgin, so I wasn't totally ignorant. I could flirt with the best of them - but for this bastard to put some drug in my drink to get me in bed, he is just evil. I hope his life has sucked and he thinks back on all the horrible things he did to me and no doubt other women in his life. No, I hate him - he would never see me cry.

So true. There are ways to behave and doing foolish things that are looking for trouble isn't one of them.

I hate the guy that did this to me too..and I know that I should never have broke down like that...but seeing him caught me totally off-guard. Well, I firmly believe that those who expend negative energy will get it back 10-fold.

I wouldn't say such a thing for it would give one the impression that rape victims were receiving their just desserts in the field of karma.

No...rape victims don't deserve to be raped, and I was talking about the perpetrators. Their evil, cruel ways should come back to haunt these jerks for the rest of their days...which is what I meant.

Pam, I'm sorry to hear. Things like that impact our minds in ways that those who haven't been violated have a tough time understanding. As in the rules that deb posted, instinct is probably spot on and with the drug mix in alcohol, you had no control over what he did.
Instinct and my training helped me nearly break a guys finger this past oct in a club - some man asked me to dance and me having been drinking merlot at the Glass Cactus in dallas (a very upscale club) and then heading to a Harley Bar and getting a mixed drink, my head went fuzzy. I said yes and the guy was rubbin his stuff on me. I was nice and backed off......he wouldn't let up. Even fuzzy, I managed a martial arts move that was on the brink of total pain for this dude - he let up. ;-) Instinct and reflex is very very very important.
We are trained by society to not trust it: Oh, but he comes from such a nice family. Oh, not him. Things are just going to happen, cannot change it (BULLSHITE).
The thing about rapists is that they are professionals and "nice guys" too. They aren't hairy dirty thugs exclusively. And we can do things to prevent and lower our risk of being raped.
My husband grabbed my arm one time - I don't play around with my training because it isn't a joke. If someone wants to f with me ....show me what ya got, I don't f back because my premise is you f, you die. Anyway, my husband had a friend over and they were shooting tequila. My husband was f ing around "show me some karate"....I was like leave me alone. I walked away. My husband is an ex football player with the name no-neck because he has a 21" neck still at 50 yo.
He grabbed me in play and hurt me but I never used my martial arts. He wasn't a threat. He was drunk. However, later he grabed my wrist in a reflex, I busted his wrist and he still has problems today...........can a woman protect herself? Absolutely! Using our brains and not putting ourselves in situations and not trusting those we aren't100% sure of.
But even when in a situation, using our brains - our strongest weapon of all.
