Apr 27, 2008 - Captive woman 'had 7 children by father' - 3 comments

Austrians were shocked at a news flash of a father keeping his daughter imprisoned in a cellar for 24 years and fathering six children through her.
You certainly wouldn't want to wake up on a Sunday morning and read this shocking news. A report says that an Austrian woman in the town of Amstetten was kept imprisoned and sexually abused by her own father for 24 long years. The woman, Elisabeth Fritzl is now 42. The sexual abuse over the last 24 years led to her conceiving seven children. The case tumbled out of the closet when one of the children now 19, identified as Kerstin Fritzl took ill and had to be rushed to the hospital. The police said that the girl was 'dropped off' at the hospital last weekend. Investigations to ascertain the identity of the girl led the authorities to the discovery of this heinous crime. A tip finally helped the police to narrow down the search to the house in 23,000-populated town of Amstetten.

The woman, Elisabeth , was entrapped by her father in a basement dungeon since she was 11 years old and continuously abused. She was drugged , handcuffed and incarcerated. The woman said that Joseph Fritzl, her father repeatedly abused her. The results of those perverse attacks led her to bear seven children with one dying shortly after birth. The father kept the children imprisoned with the girl-mother and provided them with clothing and food. Even more strangely, the man's wife and the girl's mother, Rosemarie was oblivious of what was happening in her own house. The Austria Press Agency said the three boys and three girls range in age from 5 and 20. Elisabeth was in a traumatic state and she answered the police queries only after being assured of her and her children's security and well being.

The police are conducting further investigations in an attempt to piece together this strange case. According to the news report, they are relying on DNA samples of all the persons concerned for clearing up the crime.

    What a sick man. Unbelievable.

I don't know how the mother could NOT have known...that sounds fishy to me.

The whole episode is very unclear. In fact, a Reuters report also did not mention any of the specifics as a news report should. It does sound very strange. I will keep searching for some more news items on this. Something, just might come up.

This sure is a strange story.
It seems strange that that many people could live in the cellar and no one ever know that they were there.

I got this link...from a search. This news item elaborates a bit further. But nothing which makes it all clear.

held captive by her father Josef in what amounted to a dungeon below their apartment in the 23,000-population town since 1984, when she was reported missing by her parents.

Josef Fritzl was detained by police and was being interviewed, but refused to cooperate, police said. Authorities began searching for the woman when a 19-year-old girl, believed to be her daughter, was hospitalized in the town Amstetten last weekend.

Amstetten's authorities had been originally told by the grandfather that the 19-year-old Kerstin, was left with him in a very severe condition on April 19 by her mother.

They were also shown a letter by the woman saying that nobody should look for her, as this would increase the suffering of her and her children, making the case even more mysterious.

    This is just bizarre!

Wow, just think how totally mentally disturbed those people will be - living in a basement their entire lives, having never seen the light of day or ventured into the real world!

CNN said that the father had elaborate pincode security systems on the doors so it was obviously impossible for them to escape. Of course why would they even think to escape, they knew nothing about real life.

How anyone could be this totally insane is beyond me....and how this guys wife could have no clue how insane he was seems hard to fathom as well. I mean to keep showing up with kids and saying their missing daughter dropped them off - come on, could this wife really be this dense?!

I would think this guy will be in a mental institution for the rest of his life, along with those poor kids that lived in the basement. GEEZ, there are crazies in the world...........

unthinkable... i can't even imagine what this would be like for any of the parties involved. imagine the horror his wife felt when she found out there was this hidden secret in her own basement for a quarter of a century.

i hope these people that were abused can find some comfort and healing.

It will take the girl a lifetime to get over this trauma after being imprisoned and abused for so long.

Especially the mother. The woman also had siblings. It is very strange but must be traumatic for her. The father destroyed her entire life.

I suppose it could be possible that the mother didn't know about it. I do doubt it though. How can someone not ever go into every part of their house.

I agree...that abuse and being kept locked away went on for way-too-long, and she must feel so scared at being allowed to be out in the real world again. I can't even begin to fathom the Hell she's been though.
